Welcome news today as five Newcastle players trained with the rest of the first team after being out injured.
The open training session at St James Park saw Fabricio Coloccini training in front of supporters as he looks to get back playing after being plagued by an achilles problem throughout the summer.
The injury has meant the Argentine international hasn’t played a single minute of the seven friendlies this summer.
In a similar position is Cheick Tiote, after 45 minutes against Gateshead, the Ivory Coast international hasn’t played in the other six friendlies, hopefully now on his way back after a season ruined by injury last time.
Emmanuel Riviere was another on the pitch today, the Frenchman recuperating from a knee injury which saw him sent back early from the tour of America.
Whilst his compatriot Remy Cabella also joined training today, the winger another player not to get any pre season friendly action due to a thigh injury in his case.
The fifth one sees a return for Paul Dummett, the Geordie defender at last on his way back after being struck down by knee and hamstring injuries.
In addition to the five players who have been out injured, it was also a slight surprise to see Mehdi Abeid involved at St James Park today.
This week it was claimed that the Algerian international had been in talks with Fortuna Dusseldorf ahead of a potential move for around 2m euros (approx £1.4m).
Let’s hope Steve McClaren has as many of his squad back as soon as possible but surely for the five who have been out injured, Southampton on Sunday will be far too early for a return to first team action.
