Before a ball was kicked the bookies installed new boy Aleksandar Mitrovic as the favourite to be top Newcastle goalscorer in the Premier League.
The opening odds saw Mitrovic 9/4, Papiss Cisse next best at 11/4, followed by 7/2 Ayoze Perez and then attacking midfielder Gini Wijnaldum on 5/1.
After the opening 90 minutes it has already produced a real shake-up in the odds.
He might only have scored from a few inches but Papiss Cisse is the new favourite at 9/4, with Mitrovic moving out and Wijnaldum’s odds shortening.
Here are the new front runners, the full list can be seen by going HERE;
11/4 Aleksandar Mitrovic
7/2 Georginio Wijnaldum
5/1 Ayoze Perez
10/1 Moussa Sissoko
Papiss Cisse’s durability is impressive and last season he easily topped the NUFC goals chart despite only starting 11 Premier League games, (one goal) Emmanuel Riviere having started last season as favourite.
With Aleksandar Mitrovic looking a little bit *raw’ when he came on as a late substitute, you can only imagine that for the foreseeable future Steve McClaren will look to play either both strikers, or Cisse as a lone striker as Mitrovic adapts.
Gini Wijnaldum has swapped places with Ayoze Perez in the betting and no surprise after his stunning header and freedom to get forward against Southampton, in contrast it looks like the Spaniard could struggle for a lot of game time unless injuries strike.
The big positive of course is that we are talking about WHO will score the goals from a credible selection of players, rather than worrying about WHERE our next goal will come from.
