The second round of the Capital One Cup has now taken place.

The draw took place on Thursday night after the conclusion of the Doncaster v Leeds first round game, Doncaster winning 4-2 on penalties after it ended 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes and a goalless extra-time.

The draw had 24 seeded clubs and 24 unseeded, with Newcastle not able to play another seeded club at this stage.

Those Premier League clubs involved in either the Europa League or Champions League, don’t join in until round three.

The two groups were:

Seeded:

AFC Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Cardiff City, Charlton Athletic, Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham, Hull City, Ipswich Town, Leicester City, Middlesbrough, Newcastle United, Norwich City, QPR, Reading, Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke City, Sunderland, Swansea City, Watford, West Brom, Wolves, Brighton

Unseeded:

Barnet, Barnsley, Burton Albion, Bury, Carlisle, Exeter City, Gillingham, Hartlepool United, Luton Town, MK Dons, Northampton Town, Notts County, Oxford United, Peterborough United, Port Vale, Portsmouth, Preston North End, Rochdale, Rotherham United, Sheffield United, Shrewsbury, Walsall, York City, Doncaster

The second round matches will be played in the W/C 24 August and Newcastle have drawn Northampton Town at St James Park, a potential chance for 19 year old new signing Ivan Toney to be involved against his former club.

The match will take place in between Newacstle visiting Old Trafford and then hosting Arsenal on the following weekend.

All eyes will be on the Steve McClaren team  selection after the supposed commitment of Mike Ashley to now try in the cups.

Elsewhere, Sunderland narrowly avoided a trip to the other St James Park, instead being drawn at home against Exeter City.
