BBC ignore Wijnaldum credentials

It has been a busy summer transfer window already for Premier League clubs, and another influx of quality players, but the BBC appear to have hit a blind spot with Georginio Wijnaldum.

BBC 5 Live Sport have picked their ‘Newbies Eleven’ of summer Premier League signings (Ayew? Gueye?) and no sign of Newcastle’s Dutch signing.

Ironically, both Mbemba and Mitrovic are included but not the other signing.

I think this is indicative of how Wijnaldum has crept in under the radar a little bit and not got the publicity that a player of his level would normally have got, if he’d signed for say Spurs or Liverpool…

An easy choice for them to include Mbemba and Mitrovic as they have a bit of a story to go with them, the defender’s multiple birthdays and Mitrovic having the profile of being a bit of a ‘character’.

Whereas, Wijnaldum has ‘just’ been the Captain of title winning PSV (by 17 points from second place Ajax),  plus one of Holland’s stand out performers as they finished third at last summer’s World Cup, as well as being named the Dutch League’s player of the season last year.

It doesn’t do any harm that the Dutch midfielder isn’t getting the column inches he should be doing, but let’s just hope though that he is when people are looking back at this upcoming season, when the £14,5m signing has shown he can translate his undoubted quality from the Dutch League to the Premier League.
