Arsenal boss thinks Newcastle have a ‘very spectacular player’ on their hands

The two English clubs most associated with recruiting French players meet on Saturday, with Arsene Wenger stating that in Florian Thauvin, Newcastle have signed a ‘very spectacular player’.

The Arsenal boss was claimed to have registered an interest in buying the former Marseille winger in the past but it is Newcastle who have now paid around £13m to finally bring him to England.

Wenger describes Thauvin as one of France’s ‘promising talents’, somebody who has good pace and likes to run at the opposition.

A description that ticks a lot of boxes for the type of player Newcastle fans love to see.

The Arsenal manager says Newcastle are ‘maybe the second best French club, number-wise’ in the Premier League, behind Arsenal naturally.

As always, Arsene Wenger is full of praise for the Newcastle crowd, stating that ‘they always stand behind their team’.

The manager also spoke up for his likely makeshift centre-back pairing, declaring that they have the potential to play ‘at the top, top level’.

Thay may prove so but hopefully that potential isn’t realised until sometime after tomorrow’s match.

Speaking to the official Arsenal website, Arsene Wenger:

“He is a left-footed player who likes to run at people and has good physical qualities, good pace, he is a very spectacular player.

“He is a promising young player from France and we have seen in recent years that Newcastle is maybe the second best French club, number-wise, they have bought many French players and he is one of the promising talents.”

Magnificent up north:

“The crowd is absolutely magnificent up north, especially at Newcastle, they always stand behind their team. They are always games played with a lot of commitment and at a very high pace.”

Defenders with potential:

“Both Chambers and Gabriel have the potential to play at the top, top level. Chambers had a difficult start but he has shown his mental strength.

“I know he’s a great player and he has shown that if even if things don’t start as well as you would like, he can stabilise his game and respond. He has a great mental strength on top of his talent. Gabriel has shown great talent as well and has done very well.”
