Tim Krul aiming to replicate fifth place finish of 2011/12

Tim Krul is dreaming of a similar outcome to Newcastle United’s last visit to America.

In summer 2011, United travelled to the States and played a trio of matches against Orlando City, Columbus Crew and Sporting Kansas City.

In the aftermath of that visit, the players actually talked about what a nightmare it had been in terms of the number of flights, combined with the heat.

However, the team then started that season in great form, with no defeats in their first 11 Premier League matches.

Seven wins and four draws saw United flying high with 25 points from a possible 33.

Whilst that season will be most remembered for the goals and attacking highlights of Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Cisse and Ba, it was actually Tim Krul and his back four who were instrumental in getting the team off to such a flyer.

Only 8 goals were conceded in those first 11 Premier League matches and now the Newcastle keeper hopes for a repeat performance.

Tim Krul speaking to official club website:

“I’m excited to go to America and really step our pre-season up,as I have got good memories of our last trip there (summer 2011).

“The heat is something else and I remember it wasn’t easy to train in but on that trip we started to really come together as a team out there.”

Dreaming of fifth:

“It was a hard pre season, a tough tour, but it did really kick us on, we went unbeaten for the first 11 games of that season, ending up finishing fifth.

“If we could get the same preparation and response this time, it would be amazing.”

Toon Army USA:

“There’s a great support for us out there and I remember the fans coming to training sessions and our friendlies in really good numbers.

“Great to see that they support us so well from so far away, so it is nice to be heading out there again and hopefully quite a few manage to get along to see us.”
