Making a change from Steve McClaren allegedly chasing players he had with him at Derby, with claims today that he is keen on a reunion with Douglas.

The 6ft 3 central defender was first choice for McClaren when FC Twente lifted the Dutch title in the 2009/10 season and The Mail claim that the one-time England boss is keen to be reunited with the Dynamo Moscow defender.

When the now Newcastle Head Coach returned to Twente in 2012 he stayed until February 2013 before resigning, Douglas following him out of the door at the end of the season and joining the Russian club, having ran his contract down and leaving on a free.

Most Newcastle fans will of course remember that United had their very own saga with the Brazilian turned Dutch centre-back, with claims over a long period that Alan Pardew had him lined up as the towering centre-back, who can also score goals, that we are so desperate for still.

It was the summer of 2012 when United had finished fifth, that the speculation was at its height, but of course ironically instead of signing that big bruising centre-back we were desperate for, Newcastle signed Vurnon Anita…

Now 27, Douglas was no doubt tempted by the big wages on offer these days to join the one of the Russian clubs offering big wages but on the pitch he has had a mixed time.

With 20 league starts in his first season and 19 over the last year for Dynamo Moscow, he has never really nailed down a permanent place in the starting eleven.

Also, whilst he dreamed of playing for Holland after obtaining a Dutch passport, the nearest he got was sitting on the bench twice as an unused sub back in 2012. So it is possible he could see a new career in the Premier League giving him a small possibility of getting back in the Holland squad.

A fourth place finish last year also means that both Douglas and Dynamo Moscow won’t be in Europe this coming season.

If there is genuine interest then you would imagine the transfer fee wouldn’t be prohibitive but the wages might pose a problem if the defender expects them to at least be matched by Newcastle.

Never seen him play, but I would bet my life he is better than mike the plank.

Any idea what he’s earning now? McClaren knows him well, so that gives an advanted. Can’t see his international career progressing whilst in Russia, whereas world wide exposure in the PL has to be a massive plus, playing in really competitive games week in week out. If McClaren really fancies this guy, then I don’t envisage many problems getting him. Over to you Chumlee.  (That being the biggest problem, of course lol). I would rate this as quite promising.

Finally the penny has F in dropped….. hallelujah!
Mr McClaren you need to wake up to the fact that we need TWO quality centre backs.
Perm any two from these three —
    Douglas
    Khacheridi
    Van Dijk

He’s far to old for us. The regime will not break their rules! So no good getting excited about it!

The Mirror ran a story in 2012, the gist of it was Llambias left  NUFC over a row with Kinnear over Douglas.JFK had never heard of him, so went to speak to Mc Claren about Douglas……JFK said McClaren put him off Douglas, and the plug was pulled.
This was the breaking point for Llambias who resigned, Graham Carr almost went also….Now 3 years on….hes on McClarens radar….you could not make this stuff up if you tried !!!!

Sound a bit dubious to me, but at least he is a C.B and must be an improvement over what we have, surely? Titus B anyone? Can’t help thinking going back for him after all this time is a disaster waiting to happen.

Williamson was not good for the first 15 minutes against Atlas but did ok after that. Lascelles looks like he has a bit of pace and strength but again is by no means cultured on the ball. In reality Colocinni is our only talented player in the centre back department. Steven Taylor can play a bit and is easily second best choice for me but we could really do with someone else that doesnt panic in posession. Especially since it seems like Mclaren wants us to retain possession and build from the back.

There is NO WAY we will not sign a talented ball playing centre back this window. Mclaren knows by now better than any of us that we only have 1 in Collocini and it is his last year at the club.
