The squad flew out of Newcastle Airport earlier today for their pre season tour of America.

Altogether 23 players were on the flight, with new signing Georginio Wijnaldum set to join them over in the States.

The 24 man squad was named as:

Goalkeepers: Karl Darlow, Freddie Woodman, Tim Krul,

Defenders: Fabricio Coloccini, Curtis Good, Jamaal Lascelles, Massadio Haidara, Daryl Janmaat, Steven Taylor, Mike Williamson

Midfielders: Rolando Aarons, Vurnon Anita, Gael Bigirimana, Gabriel Obertan, Jack Colback, Siem de Jong, Shane Ferguson, Yoan Gouffran, Moussa Sissoko, Georginio Wijnaldum (joining the squad later)

Strikers: Adam Armstrong, Papiss Cisse, Ayoze Perez, Emmanuel Riviere

Also of interest to a lot of fans are the players not making the trip, with the club explaining the absence of six of those who haven’t travelled:

‘Rob Elliot, Paul Dummett, Remy Cabella, Cheick Tiote, Mehdi Abeid, Sylvain Marveaux¬†are not on the tour as they all work their way back to fitness on Tyneside following injuries.’

This leaves the following contracted players:

Haris Vuckic, Lubomir Satka, Olivier Kemen, Kevin Mbabu, Adam Gilliead, Callum Roberts, Dan Barlaser, Jamie Sterry, Tom Heardman, Macauley Gillesphey, Liam Smith

Of that last list, Olivier Kemen is currently playing for France Under 19s at the European Championships in Greece, whilst the writing appears on the wall for both Haris Vuckic and Lubomir Satka.

No real surprise for Vuckic but if Satka is rated as having any chance then surely he would have made the trip, turning 20 in December he looks to have no future at the club.

As for the six said to be recovering from injury, I think this is clearly the case with Dummett.

However, with some or all of the other five I can see movement out of the club.

Cheick Tiote played against Gateshead on Friday night so it has to be questionable as to him missing the trip, whilst there has been a lot of speculation surrounding Remy Cabella – with a swap deal for Florian Thauvin suggested by some.

With Abeid, Elliot and Marveaux it would be no surprise to see them on their way, though a number of Newcastle fans will still feel that Mehdi Abeid could build on the promise of a couple of stand out displays last season

There will have to be movement out, permanently or on loan. The 25 man squad published on the NUFC website has recently included Marveaux. There is also a requirement for 8 of the 25 to be home grown. Wijnaldum makes it 26, so one too many already. I would like to see Tiote (not committed), Vuckic (too slow), Cabella and Marveaux (both lightweights) offloaded. Abeid has a lot of potential –keep.

In November 2014 the mag published a story about 21 players who’s contracts were in need of sorting. It’s interesting reading and gives some idea of what is going on at the club.

June 2015 Ryan Taylor, Rolando Aarons (media claims that there is an extra one year option), Hatem Ben Arfa, Sammy Ameobi, Facundo Ferreyra (Loan), Jonas Gutierrez, Jak Alnwick, Remie Streete, Adam Campbell, Lubomir Satka

June 2016 Rob Elliot, Shane Ferguson, Kevin Mbabu, Haris Vuckic, Gabriel Obertan, Steven Taylor, Mehdi Abeid, Sylvain Marveaux, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini, Davide Santon

Basically this is what happened in 2015

    June 2015:

Retained – Rolando Aarons, Sammy Ameobi (loaned), Lubomir Satka

Released – Ryan Taylor, Hatem Ben Arfa, Facundo Ferreyra (Loan), Jonas Gutierrez, Jak Alnwick, Remie Streete, Adam Campbell.

So if we look at 2016 what might happen? Santon has already gone as for the rest this is what I think we may well see.

    Released/Moved on – Davide Santon
Probably wind down last year/move? Rob Elliot, Shane Ferguson, Haris Vuckic, Kevin Mbabu, Gabriel Obertan, Steven Taylor, Mehdi Abeid, Sylvain Marveaux, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini

People saying players need to be moved on are right, however I think this is naturally/planned happening already and so there should be little or no need to move on players when we bring them in, we may just release someone/move them to reserves etc.

There has been much speculation regards Cabella but I think it’s too early to move him on, he needs time another season at least, he will need to bulk up and then he should be some player, on the other hand who knows, at 24/5 maybe he’s too old to learn new tricks?

    Dummett and Abeid clearly injured.

Elliott is a Pardew man through and through, and with Darlow and Woodman coming through his time is up, he’ll be off (Palace?)

Tiote and Marv have been on their way toward the door for some time, reckon there’s negotiation on both those fronts ongoing, nothing against the lads but they don’t seem to have a place, Tiote is all physique and no skill, Marv the reverse. They’ll get us a few quid and clear a couple spaces in the squad for new imports.

Cabella I could see going either way, I want to see him have a second season under McClaren, but wouldn’t blame those in charge for cashing in now if McClaren doesn’t want him.

    injured? already?
