Turkish Super Lig broadcaster Lig TV reported yesterday that Cheick Tiote’s agent had met officials from Trabzonspor to discuss a potential summer move for the Newcastle midfielder.
Now the same Turkish media source claim that the Turkish club have also got their eye on a move for Papiss Cisse.
Star striker Oscar Cardozo (23 starts and 17 league goals last season) will miss the start of the season through injury and so Trabzonspor’s need for another striker is even more urgent.
Incidentally, Cardozo is one of the (countless) strikers to have been linked with a move to Newcastle in recent seasons, leaving Benfica for around £4m last summer.
LigTV also claim that Trabzonspor made an unsuccessful offer of over £5m for Cisse last year.
The Turkish club finished fifth last season and are looking to invest this summer as they eye the Champions League spots.
Tiote turned 29 on Sunday and just like 30 year old Papiss Cisse, my money is on Mike Ashley banking the cash if he can get an acceptable offer for either/both, especially as they are two of the club’s biggest earners.
Both of them are increasingly injury prone and having made a number of appearances near the front of newspapers recently, rather than the rear, between the two of them they only made 21 (Tiote 10, Cisse 11) Premier League starts last season.
The players are due back to pre season training in only seven days time and we wait to see whether two players, who at one time were seen as automatic key players, will still be at the club once the window ends.
