Slovenia manager Srecko Katanec has told Haris Vuckic that he has to be playing at a higher level of football if he international aspirations.

The striker was arguably Rangers’ best player in the final four months of the season after joining on loan from Newcastle.

However, the standard of football in the Scottish Championship didn’t impress Katanec, nor did Haric Vuckic, despite scoring nine goals for the Glasgow club:

“Haris (Vuckic) played for Rangers in the Second Division (Championship) in Scotland.

“I was disappointed, not just with him, but with the quality of the league he was playing in – I would have thought Rangers would have had a better team.”

Vuckic has another year of his contract left at Newcastle and turns 23 in August.

He actually made his international debut for the senior Slovenian team at the age of 19, coming on as a sub against Scotland in a 1-1 draw.

However, since that game over three years ago, he has been limited to under 21 games for Slovenia.
