Chris Hughton is interested in a reunion with Newcastle winger Sammy Ameobi.

The local press on the south coast report that the Brighton manager is interested in the Newcastle player, whether it is on a permanent deal or a loan arrangement.

Newcastle United had to offer Ameobi a new deal regardless this summer, or else they couldn’t claim any development compensation if he ended up signing for another club after his current contract ends on 30 June.

As yet no details as to the length of that contract were made public, or indeed whether Sammy Ameobi intends to sign it, or move on.

Chris Hughton has a major rebuilding job on his hands at Brighton, with Sami Hyppia leaving last December with only 19 points in the bank from the first 22 Championship matches.

The former NUFC boss brought some stability and Albion finished the season six points above the relegation places on 47 points.

Sammy Ameobi managed 15 Premier League starts last season but as one of any number of players who showed no heart or ability in the latest defeat at Sunderland at the start of April, the winger was instantly dropped and didn’t make another starting eleven in the relegation run-in.

Many Newcastle fans are looking at Ameobi as a barometer of the club’s ambitions.

If players of a certain standard aren’t brought in, who make it clear to Shola’s younger brother that he is wasting his time staying at St James Park, then it looks a bleak outlook for the coming season.

Just getting him to play would be an achievement

I’ve seen him play at least 2 games where he looked as though he cared, but this was for the last 25 minutes. Could be down to poor coaching, but lets face it, top players look at their game and say to themselves ” that’s where I need to improve and work on “. He’s had his chance for his home club and I’m sorry to say – ” Bye-bye “.
