Ayoze Perez signed for Newcastle exactly a year ago today, ‘one for the future’ Alan Pardew told us.

Parachuted in from the Spanish second division, the young striker was thrown into the first game of the season as a substitute against then Champions Manchester United and never looked back.

Perez went on to feature in 36 of Newcastle’s 38 Premier League games, both as a starter and from the bench, and scored seven vital goals in the process.

Arguably being the difference between staying up an d relegation, as the likes of more expensive fellow signings Riviere and Cabella flopped.

The one moment Ayoze Perez will never forget though, is the one when Jonas Gutierrez made his emotional return against Manchester United.

Ayoze Perez speaking to the official club website:

“Playing in the Premier League was a dream since I was a child and Newcastle United has given me the chance to make this dream come true. An unforgettable year and I hope it’s just the beginning of something big here in Newcastle.

“I will never forget my first time in St. James’, when I entered in the pitch, it was awesome. I also remember with a smile my first goal in the Premier League against Tottenham.”

Better moments ahead:

“Of course, I will keep forever in my memory the return of Jonás (Gutierrez) against Manchester United.

“I’m now looking forward next season  to seeing the Toon Army in St. James’ again, giving them better moments than this year.”

That lad is a pure diamond…able to step up and play the game
the way he did like that was something special…We should all take our hats off
to him for the way he stuck at it.

…Just because Cabella and Riviere didn’t have the same
impact on the side shouldn’t condemn them as ‘flops’ though…it takes a lot of ‘good
luck and a fair amount of help from team mates’ to come into any struggling
team, and tick all the boxes…

…I’d expect a lot more from them going into the new
    season though…

His going to be a huge talent…. but he will be more effective for us if he had to play as an CAM behind a top striker like Austin or someone big and strong that knows where the goal is….If he does get a partner like that he will be getting goals galore and he’ll be scoring it for the fun of it
