Ayoze Perez signed for Newcastle exactly a year ago today, ‘one for the future’ Alan Pardew told us.
Parachuted in from the Spanish second division, the young striker was thrown into the first game of the season as a substitute against then Champions Manchester United and never looked back.
Perez went on to feature in 36 of Newcastle’s 38 Premier League games, both as a starter and from the bench, and scored seven vital goals in the process.
Arguably being the difference between staying up an d relegation, as the likes of more expensive fellow signings Riviere and Cabella flopped.
The one moment Ayoze Perez will never forget though, is the one when Jonas Gutierrez made his emotional return against Manchester United.
Ayoze Perez speaking to the official club website:
“Playing in the Premier League was a dream since I was a child and Newcastle United has given me the chance to make this dream come true. An unforgettable year and I hope it’s just the beginning of something big here in Newcastle.
“I will never forget my first time in St. James’, when I entered in the pitch, it was awesome. I also remember with a smile my first goal in the Premier League against Tottenham.”
Better moments ahead:
“Of course, I will keep forever in my memory the return of Jonás (Gutierrez) against Manchester United.
“I’m now looking forward next season to seeing the Toon Army in St. James’ again, giving them better moments than this year.”
