Newcastle United’s relegation odds have tumbled after last night’s disastrous match at the Emirates.
Defeat for Sunderland would have meant Newcastle could have finished above them with a win and a heavy defeat for the mackems at Chelsea.
Defeat for Arsenal would have meant Manchester United could still overtake them for third place and automatic entry to Champions League group stage, which then would have given Man Utd every incentive to beat Hull.
The reality of a goalless draw means both options have disappeared; Sunderland are safe and Man Utd can’t realistically catch Arsenal and so have nothing to play for.
Before the match the odds on the third relegation spot were 1/4 Hull, 11/2 Newcastle and 7/1 Sunderland.
With the mackems out of the picture, the two other clubs have seen their odds significantly reduce to:
1/6 Hull and 7/2 Newcastle….a two horse race and we’re catching up fast!
