Recent reports from the states suggested that Newcastle United were taking part in a pre-season six club tournament in Dallas.

The preliminary details had both Swansea City and NUFC representing the Premier League alongwith clubs from four other countries.

When  these reports emerged, John Carver confirmed that talks had taken place but nothing had yet been signed off.

Now Swansea have confirmed their participation and given details on their official club website of the tournament which runs from July 11th to the 19th.

However, one name has changed, instead of Newcastle United there is a second Mexican club, Chivas Guadlajera.

No confirmation/explanation has been forthcoming yet from the Newcastle end of things.

This is the news that appeared on the Swansea website earlier today:

‘Swansea City will prepare for the new Barclays Premier League season in America by competing in an international tournament in Dallas, Texas, from July 11-19.

Garry Monk’s squad will fly to America for a week’s intense training before going on to compete in the six-team tournament that includes Chivas Guadalajara (Mexico), Olympique Lyonnais (France), Raja Casablanca (Morocco), Pachuca (Mexico) and Malaga (Spain). ‘

If we are not going because we use the time to play local games and put our squad together and prepare properly for the coming season (assuming of course it isn’t planning for life in the Championship), the great.
The important thing this summer isn’t building international image and cross country relations, it is rebuilding a squad that will certainly send us down if we go into next season with it this threadbare.  We need new additions and lots of them, which means more time required to settle them into the squad and get everyone playing from the same music sheet.  Also, assuming we do install a new manager then the longer we can give him to work with the squad the better.   All this assumes we do some early transfer business of course and don’t leave everything until the last minute.

If we aren’t going to the tournament because it is too expensive then that is a shocking disgrace, but highly predictable.

Just failed to get that one over the line.
