Newcastle United have offered to double Florian Thauvin’s wages according to reports in France.
Canal+ say that their information is that Newcastle are determined to get the 22 year old winger this summer and therefore have made the double your money offer.
With the super tax for high earners in France, it is easier for English clubs to offer bigger net wages to attract players over the channel.
You may recall that United have been repeatedly linked with the exciting young French player.
In January 2013 (when United signed five French players) Thauvin turned down United in favour of moving to Lille, Yohan Cabaye’s old club.
Explaining his choice at the time the player said:
“Newcastle and Arsenal are very big clubs and the Premier league is also really big, so I was very happy with their interest.
“It just makes me even more determined to make it to the top.
“I considered it with my agents but we’ve always put football first and I thought Lille offer was most appealing.”
Lille paid around £3m and got a real bargain because then only six months later Florian Thauvin moved for £10m to Marseille, after going on strike to force a move.
Once again Newcastle showed serious interest and it was reported in France that they had matched Marseille’s offer, only for the player once again to decide to stay in his home country.
Now Marseille are said to be ready to sell, after looking title contenders for much of the season they are now struggling to even qualify for the Champions League. Currently in fourth position but level on points with fifth placed St.Etienne who have played a game less.
The latest move though sees the French media report that Tottenham have also made contact with Marseille and registered an interest in the player, though Newcastle’s French contingent and a guaranteed place in the team are said to be factors that could still see United at last land the player.
The winger has scored 15 goals over these past two season for Marseille and is quick with great close control, he has played at all levels for France up to Under 21 level and played Champions League football last season for his club.
Considering Thauvin’s past confirmation of sustained Newcastle interest and offers for him, this transfer story may have a lot more legs than the other hundred reported in the last week or so.
