Michael Owen relegation day verdict on Newcastle and Hull
Michael Owen has delivered his final day verdict on Newcastle United and Hull City.
Our old friend points out that just because a team is desperate to win and has something to play for, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they will get the victory they need.
To back up that point, Owen predicted a win for QPR last weekend when many other pundits tipped a Newcastle win and bizarrely were made favourites by the bookies.
OwenThis weekend Newcastle are once again favourites to win against another team with nothing to play for….

Newcastle v West Ham
‘Just because teams need to win at this stage of the season, or still have something to play for, doesn’t mean they will, and I was adamant that Newcastle were false favourites to win at QPR last week…and so it proved.
“You can’t just flick a switch and play well because you need to, recent form tells you that Newcastle are the worst side in the league side at the moment, and by some distance too.
“So I think if any side is going to take all three points here then it is West Ham, for all that they have only won away three times this season and are hardly finishing their campaign in blistering form either. I go 1-0 or 2-1 to West Ham.’
Hull v Man Utd
‘Hull have reasons to be confident of taking the three points.
The first is their opponents’ injury list, and the second is the fact that Utd have been very poor on the road this season. Their record of just six away victories is the worst of any of the top eight sides in the league. That’s a pretty sobering stat.
Hull had their chances in a 2-0 loss at Tottenham at the weekend and it was only last month that they were beating Liverpool 1-0 at the KC, so I am not ruling out any outcome here.’
So defeat for Newcastle and ‘any’ outcome for Hull City – could be a nervous 90 minutes this afternoon if Michael Owen is on the money…
