Steve McClaren dismisses Newcastle as ‘irrelevant’

With ongoing claims that Steve McClaren has been targeted as the new manager/head coach at St. James’ Park next season, the Derby County boss has reacted by saying any talk of a move to Newcastle is ‘irrelevant’.

The former England boss says he doesn’t read the papers and all he hears is the odd mention from other people about the supposed United interest.

McClaren says he is only focused on the job at Derby County, though if there is serious interest from Mike Ashley then the crunch would surely come if Derby fail to win promotion and an offer from Newcastle was made:

“We have said from day one we’ve got a job to do here and we’re focused totally on that.

“Everything else is irrelevant and speculation.”

Newspapers:

“I do not read the newspapers and I only hear it (Newcastle speculation) occasionally from people who tell me, but not many people do.

“It is football, it is newspapers and it is that time of the season.”
