Siem de Jong struggles as NUFC reserves lose 4-0 at Derby

Newcastle reserves were hoping to make it 2 wins in their last 13 matches on Tuesday afternoon, with Siem de Jong, Adam Armstrong and Facundo Ferreyra featuring as the front three.

Adam Armstrong scored twice in the previous second string match to give the reserves their first win in twelve and John Carver was in attendance at the Derby County training centre.

United lining up with:

Woolston, Sterry, Laidler, Kemen, Newberry, Cameron, Ward, Ferreyra, Armstrong, De Jong, Barlaser

Whilst the Newcastle Head Coach raved about this same attacking trio’s display against Aston Villa reserves last Monday, there was little sign of it this afternoon.

With fans hoping de Jong will have a major impact in the remaining four Premier League matches and John Carver stating he will feature from the bench on Saturday, today was maybe a timely reminder that they need to tread carefully when it comes to expecting too much of a play who has played so little football in the last year.

Peter Beardsley having claimed earlier that Siem de Jong was a better player than he had been.

The Dutchman was anonymous as Derby took Newcastle apart with two goals in each half, with Thomas & Bennett scoring in the first and McDonald & Calero in the second.

Adam Armstrong was unlucky to see a fine shot brilliantly tipped away by the Derby keeper but there was little else to cheer the watching Newcastle Head Coach.

Facundo Ferreyra was replaced in the 82nd minute by Tom Heardman.

Final Score: Derby County 4 Newcastle United 0
