Paul Merson ‘Newcastle United are in a bad place’
Paul Merson has summed up what many supporters have known for a while, the player turned pundit declaring that ‘Newcastle United are in a bad place at the moment’.
Reviewing Sunday’s match, the former Arsenal player says that United need to win a match quickly but doesn’t think it will happen this weekend.
Merson believes that Newcastle will lose to Spurs and this would make it only 3 wins in the last 20 matches for NUFC, with 2 wins in 15 of those games under John Carver.
“These two sides may as well be on the beach.
“Newcastle United are in a bad place at the moment and they need to win a football match quickly.”
However, Paul Merson doesn’t necessarily think that a win will do Spurs any favours either.
His reasoning being that qualifying for the Europa League would be a massive negative.
However, surely that thinking is a bit outdated now that the winners of that competition now also get qualification for the following season’s Champions League as part of their prize.
“I think Tottenham will prevail but if they do win I don’t think it’s a great result.
“It is getting to the stage of the season where I don’t think too many teams really want to finish fifth or sixth, the Europa League is a huge distraction for teams that qualify.”
