Newcastle United are targeting Jordan Rhodes for a summer transfer and have been watching him in recent matches.

On Tuesday night, the striker scored his 18th league goal of the season as Blackburn drew 2-2 at Birmingham, with Football League World reporting that Newcastle had scouts in the stand watching this latest appearance.

Newcastle are desperate for at least one, preferably two, new striker(s) with a proven goalscoring record and Rhodes has certainly got that.

The 25 year old has scored 18 in 37 Championship starts this season, making it 69 in 124 league starts since moving as a 22 year old for £8m from Huddersfield.

Hull had a £12m bid turned down last summer and whilst Jordan Rhodes’ goals may have been scored in the second tier, Newcastle have to find goals from somewhere and they won’t come cheap.

Disastrous signings like the woeful budget signing Emmanuel Riviere, expecting a journeyman French striker with no decent goals record to step up to the Premier League, just can’t be repeated.

United have got really lucky with Papiss Cisse’s remarkable goals per minutes played record this season and the fact that (one for the future!) Ayoze Perez chipped in with a handful of crucial goals.

Potentially having to pay something like £15m or more for a Championship striker is reality these days, what Mike Ashley will make of that is open to question.

Does anyone seriously believe that Newcastle will pay in the region of £15m for a player…..any player?? More club propaganda masquerading as news.

Rhodes and Charlie Austin will do if plus 2 other similar goal scoring strikers on the bench.  Two experienced central defenders with pace (with the forest lad and Saylor in reserve), a cultured experienced left back, 3 or 4 attacking midfielders who add goals and a right winger who can beat his man and cross the ball.  Plus a David Batty type battler.

Goodbye to Krul if we get a good fee and all others are up for offer too, then we can sign some ‘fresh’ better committed players who are proud to wear the shirt and give everything for the opportunity to play for NUFC.

The new manager can come from the championship also

NotFatFreddy Rather have ings and austin along with Sean Dyche then let dyche choose a couple of CB’s and a cover young right back, midfield is covered as is GK and its a very very good squad. As long as they don’t do rash tackles spit or elbow some horrible irish pilik or manc knobber.

  • No Brainer

pissed off mag No Brainer He’s been amongst our best players in the last few weeks ……………
I a kna that means he could play for carlisle.

Same could be said for Schevchenko and Torres at Chelsea, doesn’t mean the owner won’t put his hand in his pockets. He did.

Not a problem to have ings, but checking Austin’s goal record in the none league and lower divisions before QPR and it is superb as is his record this season with a poor team who are just like us. A good goal scorer in the championship normally replicates in the Premiership, so maybe Rhodes would be a good buy also.  I think Krul is overrated and never reached his full potential so a massive fee would be beneficial as this stage in his career.  Midfield lacks goals! No one can even cross a ball into the box and we rely on taylor’s one leg for set pieces!
I wouldn’t complain at Dyche, or the Norwich or Bournemouth managers.  I’d rather see an up and coming British manager given a chance with £30 million to spend and he can sell who ever he (dis)likes and buy whoever he likes.  In that case we might see attacking football like Bournemouth fans every week and shock a few!

Yeah no brainier I probably did. But we’ve bought a crock in de Jong who has not helped the cause whatsoever and Cabella is no where near what we need to be a decent team. So yeah, in my opinion we are not any better off than before we got them
