Newcastle United are considering Jocelyn Gourvennec as a replacement for John Carver/Alan Pardew according to L’equipe today.

Gourvennec is currently at minnows Guingamp, where Sylvain Marveaux is currently on loan from Newcastle.

After the job he has done at this tiny club, Jocelyn Gourvennec is now hot property and also catching the eye of other French clubs..

Outside of France it has largely passed people by but it is a remarkable story with Gourvennec at Guingamp.

Jocelyn Gourvennec was a decent midfielder with the likes of Nantes and Rennes, plus he had a short spell at Marseille, but he never played at senior level for France and maybe this has helped him keep a low profile.

At the age of only 38 he took over at Guingamp in summer 2010, with the club in the third tier of French football.

In his first season they were promoted to Ligue 2, in his second they stabilised in seventh place, before getting promotion to Ligue 1 in his third season.

That’s not the end of the story as last season Gourvennec managed to keep them in Ligue 1 AND win the French Cup, a massive surprise to everybody over the channel.

This season, his fifth at the club, sees the 42 year old doing well in eleventh place in Ligue 1 and having performed well in the Europa League.

hopefully this is a JOKE !!!

  • Paddy Corcoran

  • RexN

He won a a cup in France? He doesn’t fit in with club policy at NUFC.

  • David Grey

    Getting tired of this shite

  • Gordan Nufc Burke

we need a sean dyhce type gaffer , we only goin to be buyin young cheap players so mite aswell hav a gaffer that can get the best outv them and inject some fighting spirit into the team, sean dyhce is the man for me

  • IanDubbleYoo

No idea who he is but he’s done a great job at Guingamp.

  • Lars Gulbrandsen

Give the job to the tealady. She cant do it worse, and they are already blaiming her. :-)

  • Corkyjohn

    Gotta be better than Carver….

  • Gary Linney

Jocelyn who? is it a wumman? Why not, just give the lass a go!

  • LintonLad

I can scarcely believe that CAshley has a plan to recruit a half-decent manager.  I can only presume his contract is coming to an end at Guingamp, because CAsh won’t spend anything on compensation.
On the other hand, 38 year old French midfielder… he’s probably a better player than most of our mob!

  • ToonTone100

Sounds like he can motivate players … that’ll make a change …. if its true

  • AndyMac1

Gotta be kidding ? 11th in Ligue 1 ? Is this good enough for the next NUFC manager ? #BoycottSpurs

  • Andgeo

Perfect for fatty, low profile, low wages, everything to prove and is prepared to work with a squad of average or below average players, which is exactly what we will have at the start of next season.

  • Andgeo

No, we deserve a proper manager. Use done of our clubs vast income to employ a top manager instead of pocketing it you fat waste of space!!

  • Polarboy

AndyMac1 Did you even read the story, the guy is working with very little resources at a small club. That he has gotten them to where they are and even won a cup is a remarkable achievement.

  • Polarboy

Carver’s a joke, this guy it would seem has something about him. Really given that it’s not even guaranteed that Carver will get the boot which would you rather.

  • AndyMac1

Of course I know about his CV and managerial history but does that make him an ideal candidate for a club the size of NUFC with its proud history ? No but it makes him an ideal candidate for a penny pinching, nomark R’shole.
Its about the dumbing down Polarboy.

  • Porciestreet

Do you not think that it’s about time that you and a lot more besides changed your opinion about “A club the size of Newcastle”.  We have not been that club for a number of years now and it is going to take a remarkable rebuilding programme to put us back anywhere near the size we all remember .
Anyone who takes us on that has a modicum of nous about how to manage properly will do a much better job than Cardue, always assuming that Nikey Mikey allows him to do his best.  Time will tell.

  • Polarboy

AndyMac1 What kind of nonsense are you talking mate. The truth is that we need a hell of a lot of work. Whether that work will ever be allowed to be done with Ashley in charge is doubtful. In any case big club, small club, whatever, you don’t dismiss a manager because he isn’t fashionable or well known, you hire him on his merits as a coach. It’s obvious from his history that he is able to get every last drop of effort out of his players and that he has some tactical awareness about him. Those sort of skills translate to any position and are a hell of a lot better than we have seen in a long time.

  • Bills frollocks

But we don’t need a manager. We already have one who tells us when to win or lose, what to aim for and who to buy and sell. He’s called Mike Ashley.

  • nufcslf

Sorry, but fatty has to go before any manager will make a difference.

  • Brownale69

the only thing about our club that “big” is the support NOTHING else. weve not been and done nowt for what 50 years? Win a cup? Win league?
