TV pundit Jamie Carragher has questioned why Mike Ashley wants to own Newcastle United.

The former Liverpool player has been an outspken critic of the team and managemnet in recent weeks and after the latest feeble defeat to Tottenham, Carragher reflected on Mike Ashley’s shocking record at St. James’ Park.

The Sky pundit correctly points out that in six previous Premier League seasons, Ashley has relegated Newcastle once and almost repeated the trick two seasons ago.

Jamie Carragher:

“It is getting to the stage now where football is so big, there is that much money with the new TV deal, sick of owners coming in who are successful business people and they think ‘where else can I make money…oh a football club’.

“People will say as supporters you have got to come back, you have got to get behind your team, but what are the owners doing for supporters?”

Could be relegated again…:

“Since Mike Ashley has been here they’ve been relegated once, they could be relegated once again, I’m sure under Alan Pardew they come close once before.

“Why does Mike Ashley want the club if there’s nothing happening? There is no cup run, I just don’t get it. I don’t get why he wants to own a football club.”

  • Peter Nealon

I know he’s a scouser …….but even still that’s the stupidest question I’ve heard in ages……..maybe something to do with the 30-50 million he’s pocketing a year!!!

  • essexMag

Dont like Carragher normally but he is only saying what the whole footballing community are thinking…..i worry that when FCB does decide to go he will first sell-off anyone of value and asset strip

  • scotty63

    essexMag doing it already

  • Sickandtiredstill

Tat Direct, Jamie. That’s all he remains interested in and NUFC helps promote it worldwide. He couldn’t give a flying [email protected]@k about supporters or football otherwise

  • BrightonMag

No company wants to be associated with failure. An empty stadium shows dissent and isn’t good for the SD brand. Those people who went to the game today are ‘Queslings’ propping up the regime. They’re not even supporting the team – sitting in silence. Muppets the lot of them. I’ve said it. Everybody is thinking that especially the so called pundits on radio and people down south. Geordies are mugs…etc…

  • ilullissat

BrightonMag Good on ya mate,Spot on

  • toonmad1956

He wants to own a football club because of the money he makes out of it. Why Newcastle United? Because we are among the most loyal fans in the game. Where else would you get people turning up to watch the crap we get served up. Only one other city in the UK – Glasgow.

  • Adam_B

toonmad1956  exactly, the man Carragher must be extremely thick if something so obvious is beyond him. IT MAKES HIM A LOT OF MONEY JAMIE. Good grief. The real issue is why the football regulatory authorities allow him to run a football club this way, but nobody seems to be debating THAT question. If we were Man U, Man C, Spurs, Arsenal or Liverpool, you can be 100% sure that there would be more of a debate about such a type of club ownership and even a chance of the FA/PL getting off their arses are intervening as they should have dome well before now. All we can hope for is that the current Ashleyout campaign raises the issue, exposes the unacceptable situation and that the FA and PL get around to doing their jobs as “custodians” of the SPORT of football in this country.

  • Conman

At his today has to be the start. The line in the sand. We must push on from here.
They announce 47k crowd but that includes seats paid for by season ticket holders who stayed away. The real number is quite clearly 10k less than that number.
We need tow keep the pressure up. This is only the start. As for the fans who went in there and had a sponsored 90 minutes silence. Well. You may as well have stayed out and supported the supporters on the outside as you didn’t spur the team on one bit.
The pundits were talking about it, the radio is talking about it. Swansea next. If we do go down, it is all down to the players, manager, coaches, and owners. Not any set of fans. We only support what we can and we feel enough is now very much enough. Boycott Swansea and get another 15k outside.

  • newcastle7

The second goal was offside not one player but four otherwise not much in it.
The lads till our best with 47’000 loyal soldiers behind us.The Liverpool gob shite whose team charges
fifty two to seventy pounds for a Monday night game yet they have never won the Premier league.
Got beat off Villa today a poor side so happy days put your shell suit in the bin.

  • newcastle7

Conman There was less than three hundred outside none who go to games anyway the average age twelve.THE BOYCOTT FAILED AGAIN.

  • Mister Tee

    So did the team…..

  • grahame49

I wanna be the Swedish chef, as I’m one of them muppets,

  • Mister Tee

@newcastle7 He usually gets on my nerves and I can’t agree with most things he says but Carragher actually seems to understand what most fans think about Ashley and that is a very strange thing to hear from someone in the mainstream media.
Answer me these 2 questions please:
1.What does Mike Ashley get out of owning Newcastle United?
2.What does Newcastle United get out of being owned by Mike Ashley?

  • 2someitsonlyagame

newcastle7 The boycott did not fail, but your support for the team failed miserably.

  • ilullissat

What is your payroll number for Sodexo.,Ashleys cost cutting contractor at St James

  • WorkingManUK

there was no way 47k fans there, I would have guestimated 10-15k stayed away, Ashley’s croneys have been cooking the numbers again, must have counted in the season tickets even if they didn’t show up, as it was a set still sold.

  • Conman

@newcastle7. I don’t normally reply to you as I just cannot support anything you say and you are very much the pants villain on here but……
    1. Our goal was offside.
    2. There’s wasn’t as it went straight in from the free kick.
    3. You say there wasn’t much in it. They absolutely dominated the game. Did Vorm make a save. No.
The boycott worked and you are not on this planet and just for note. I can’t believe I’m wasting my time replying to a complete tool.

  • ilullissat

Are you actually real, judging by your literacy I think not

  • GToon

newcastle7 Conman The boycott got a lot more coverage than the game itself. Ian Wright on 5live urged us on to get rid of him. If you dont support the boycott then fine. At what point would you suggest we protest?

  • GToon

Mister Tee Aye, but that was always going to happen with the current lot in charge. I’m surprised we managed to get one the 4 goals i expected to be scored. Funny how Spurs struggle at Burnley, lose to Villa and then suddenly wipe the floor with us. Same for the mackems, in fact same for most teams we play.

  • GToon

Adam_B toonmad1956 I think Carra is under the misconception that the football is important to Ashley. It is merely the visible part of his sporting business interest. The team were never going to make him any money through success in terms of winning games but just by having their place at the trough.

  • AP69

Here’s a question newcastle7 why go to the match (doubt you did but…) and not offer any support to the team?
The lack of atmosphere in the ground was pitiful
May of well stayed outside and tried to stop the fat man killing the club

On the TV theme i have just looked at the listing to record MOTD for my kids. It has our game advertised and then gives a few descriptions of it which include “football, sports talk” and “sports non-event”!! How very appropriate.

  • Dontoon

Hello guys been reading this site for quite some time
58 years old and was born supporting the toon – Forest Hall lad
When Ashley bought the club I was optimistic
By the time the Messiah (Keegan) bailed out for the last time I saw the writing on the wall
Gave away my Season ticket / bond as the pleasure of watching a game was gone
Moved to Spain now and am at the stage where I can’t even bear to watch my beloved club on TV
Absolute disgrace and embarassment of a club
GOOD LUCK TO YOU ASHLEY OUT SUPPORTERS!
I fear things will get a lot worse before they get better (relegation)
Carragher is spot on telling everyone what I knew years ago
The only reassuring fact is that NEWCASTLE UNITED will exist long after Mr. Ashley
Unfortunately I may never see the ressurection during my lifetime!

  • ilullissat

Spot on mate. The fans who went to the match today must realise that it is hopeless and support the boycott

  • ilullissat

I heard Wrightie and he was spot on.Dont complain about about the club then turn up.Youre only making a fool of yourself

  • Polarboy

Adam_B toonmad1956 It was likely a rhetorical question, its not like he can come out and accuse him directly. That’s a good way to get sued for defamation

  • Andgeo

All publicity is good publicity as far as cashelys concerned

  • tino o

  • PhilYare

why did everyone walk out on the 3rd goal???? wont support the boycott but inclined to walk out once they know we’re beat. thanks a lot

  • Dontoon

Andgeo  Feel sorry for you young ones
Remember listening on the radio when we won the Inter City Fairs Cup against Uijpest
Was great to have a few tinnies on Wembley Way when we payed Arsenal in the Cup Final
Great also when we played Chelsea at Wembley in the Semi Final – they are great supporters!
FA Cup semi vs Sheff Utd at Trafford – Shearer 1-0 but was £10 entry into the pubs – ended up supping tinnies on the straet with Sheffield lads! Also great supporters!
Best memories – Beating Man U 5-0, Beating Barca 3-2 Tino and arriving about 4am at Wembley v Arsenal and seeing the sea of Black and White – we are lucky to have this heritage but Mr. Ashley does not know what it’s all about!
    Howay the lads!

  • v0ices

PhilYare half them leave with 10 minutes to go no matter what the score its to beat the traffic. Not about football its a social event.

  • newcastle7

NottsToon We matched Tottenham all the way four offside for the second goal their last goal in injury time why do you hate Newcastle support Forest or County and spare me reading your
    hatred to your club.

  • newcastle7

WorkingManUK There were at least forty seven thousand there if not forty eight only three hundred school kids outside aged twelve.

  • LeazesEnder

    Mister Tee He’s a WUM

  • LeazesEnder

ilullissat I do… and I’m coming around with my needles and scissors in the early hours.

  • newcastle7

Conman How did the boycott work when in the time in the Premiership we have had forty one thousand v Blackburn,Forty two V Fulham and Forty Three v Man City yet forty seven for a Sunday game on T.V.We matched them all the way their were four players off side for their second goal the people on this site hate Newcastle but
you are glad we lost. You should be deported to Australia on the first boat.

  • newcastle7

PhilYare newcastle7 Why they are loyal unlike you traitors you are not only a disgrace to our club but to the city of Newcastle.

  • newcastle7

Sickandtiredstill GToon newcastle7 Conman Get over it the Boycott failed big style its over .

  • Sickandtiredstill

newcastle7 Sickandtiredstill GToon Conman I think you’ll find it’s just begun, bonny lad.
But apparently you think you know better than every other supporter, journalist, sports presenter or capped ex player who are all commenting on the Ashley disease now.
    Brains of a rocking horse.

  • Toon Magpie

PhilYare Boycott is just as stuoid as walking out. I didnt gonto the match but when I do I stay to the end. The trouble with a boycott is you are just the same as the non attendees, no one knows if you didnt go because you are not a fan, a watching fan on Tv, a boycotter etc.

  • Polarboy

newcastle7 Conman By the letter of the law they weren’t offside, is that law flawed in some instances yes but it’s the same rule for everyone. It just further shows how little you know about football.

  • DownUnderMag

Ashley has in fairness been open about seeing NUFC as a good income generator.  The problem is, most of us assumed this would be as an advertising vehicle for his other businesses and as a publicity stunt whereby he would be willing to push the club forward as much as financially viable in an attempt to raise the clubs (and ergo his) profiles both in the UK and internationally.

Sadly, it would appear that it is all just about how much THE CLUB can actually generate in revenue for him with as little spent as possible, absolutely zero interest in winning anything or having anything even resembling success.

Personally I don’t want a huge cash injection, it would tear the heart and soul out of the club just as much as Ashley’s under-investment and apathy is right now.  What the club needs…no DESERVES…is an owner who actually cares about the fans, is willing to let the club generate and SPEND it’s own money and attempt to push the club forward, perhaps never getting to the lofty heights of competing for league titles and Champions League, but at least TRYING!
All we ask is that we look to at least be trying to win a cup, at least trying to build a squad capable of competing for a European place….

  • Tadger

newcastle7 Conman  I live in Australia and there is a nice lonely spot in the Simpson Desert you might find appealing then we will not have to read your tripe

  • Mister Tee

    @newcastle7
What does Mike Ashley get out of owning Newcastle United?
What does Newcastle United get out of being owned by Mike Ashley?

  • Steve1221

Toon Magpie PhilYare If the club announce an atetendance of 47000 and the tv pictures show about 10000 less than that then people know its a boycott.

  • mactoon

He owns it to advertise his SD brand free what’s so hard in understanding that? No interest in football other than ensuring he stays in the premiership where the tv money is.
