It has now been revealed that Daryl Janmaat played through the pain barrier against Sunderland.
One of the few players who could still hold their heads up after a fifth derby defeat in a row, it has emerged that the Dutch international picked up a calf injury in the warm-up before kick-off at the Stadium of Light.
The Newcastle medical team believed he may have a slight tear in his calf but with so few other options, Daryl Janmaat had to play at centre-back in the derby.
Whether he could have managed to play his usual more energy-sapping role up and down the right side must be doubtful.
Liverpool is a week today and Janmaat is to be assessed by the Newcastle club doctor to see whether he will be available.
John Carver speaking to the Shields Gazette:
“We came in after the warm-up and Daryl Janmaat had a calf problem, he might have a slight tear in his calf.
“Thankfully he got through the 90 minutes but that was what I had to deal with going into this game.”
