Young Newcastle keeper Paul Woolston has being called up by England for their European Under 17 Championship Elite Round qualifiers.

The 16 year old United goalkeeper is training at England HQ St. George’s Park this week ahead of games against Norway, Slovenia and Romania, with the aim of earning a place in this summer’s finals.

The Geordie youngster from North Shields spoke to the official FA website:

“This is the Elite Round, these teams deserve to be here just as much as us, so we know they are going to be strong. We have to be ready and we are working hard to ensure we are.

“When you go away it can sometimes take you a few days to adjust to the pitch and the hotel, but you know exactly what you are going to get at St. George’s Park. Everything is provided for us to do well, it’s up to us to use that and ensure we get the three wins that we are aiming for.

“St. George’s is the home of the England teams. It’s hard to describe what it’s like when you have your England gear on walking around the place, it makes you feel ten feet tall. But it also lets you know that you are here representing your country and you have to step up to the plate.

“We need to prove why we are worthy of pulling on the Three Lions, especially with us hosting the games. A lot more people will be watching us and we all have something to prove to show why we deserve to be in this team.”

Just in case you are in the area(s), you can get along to support Paul and his England teammates at the following in the next 8 days:

England v Norway 3pm Saturday 21 March at Burton Albion’s ground

England v Slovenia 7pm Monday 23 March at Chesterfield’s stadium

Romania 7pm Thursday 26 March at Burton Albion’s ground
