Papiss Cisse has knocked back requests to play for Senegal, in order to be fully fit for Newcastle United next season.
Senegal team coach Aliou Cissehad wanted the Newcastle striker to be available for matches later this month, but Cisse told them he was instead concentrating on United.
The Senegalese newspaper Waa Sports report that the striker thinks he has been operating at only 70% of his full fitness and needs to make sure he back to 100% for next season.
As part of that process, Papiss Cisse has had a screw removed that was inserted during last summer’s operation on his knee.
Waa Sports report a source close to Cisse telling them:
“Papiss is beginning to get fit but he will not be present in the upcoming friendlies.
“Newcastle needed him and he has only played to 70 per cent of his potential.
“Now he will use his suspension to upgrade and return to top form for next season.”
