Newcastle have been linked yet again with a move for Joe Gomez, a player who has been described as the ‘next Rio Ferdinand’ (hopefully the one who played for Man Utd and England, not the one currently on QPR’s books).
Reports from South London say that United have expressed interest in taking Gomez and teammate Jordan Cousins in the summer.
Last year, the South London media said that Alan pardew’s Charlton connections had alerted him to Gomez’ potential but the 17 year old ended up signing a new three year contract instead of moving elsewhere.
Gomez can play centre-back or right-back and despite still being only seventeen, he has made nineteen appearances this season.
Gomez was England’s star man last May when they lifted the Under 17 European Championship trophy last year and when signing the new contract last summer, he said one of the biggest reasons for sticking with Charlton was their readiness to give young players their chance in the first team;
“It has taken a little while but it is good that it’s done now and I’m happy.
“It is nice that the young players are being given a chance to play here, that’s obviously exciting for us and it was a big incentive to sign.”
Teammate Jordan Cousins has just turned 21 but despite this he has been almost an ever present in midfield for Charlton for two years, further emphasising Charlton’s youth policy and willingness to play young players.
The Addicks are now out of contention for the Championship play-off spots and any potential deal for one or both of the players would likely see a similar arrangement to the one with Forest pair Lascelles and Darlow who were instantly loaned back for the season.
