Killer stats: Newcastle, Liverpool, Spurs & Arsenal 14 games later
I know there is a lot of other competition but I accidentally came across some killer stats from this season, that perfectly sum up Newcastle United’s capacity to implode.
To take a promising situation and score multiple own goals, snatching defeat from the jaws of (relative) victory.
Cast your mind back to the first weekend of December.
Newcastle put in a very good performance to beat Chelsea 2-1 at St. James’ Park.
With 15 games completed this is how the Premier League looked for four of the clubs, number of points first and then position in the league:
23 Arsenal 6th
23 Newcastle 7th
21 Liverpool 9th
21 Spurs 10th
After completing another 14 matches each, we have got the current position:
57 Arsenal 3rd
54 Liverpool 5th
50 Spurs 7th
35 Newcastle 11th
In this 3 month, 14 match period, out of a possible 42 the four clubs have picked up 34 points (Arsenal), 33 points (Liverpool), 29 points (Spurs) and 12 points (Newcastle).
I have to say those are pretty decent efforts by Arsenal and Liverpool, potential title winning form over the course of a season – whilst Tottenham’s is a great run in its own right.
As for Newcastle United…you have to say that Mike Ashley and his puppet managers/head coaches have also overseen a pretty special effort.
12 points in 14 matches is nailed on relegation form; yet another waste of a decent position through disastrous management at the club and the failure by the owner to allow a properly resourced squad.
Ironically, Newcastle have Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs (and the mackems with a new manager) coming up in their next four matches.
I might make a note to revisit the stats after these next four games, I have a feeling there won’t be any pleasant surprises awaiting any of us.
