While some have suggested it was a cynical move to get the fans onboard, whatever the truth of the matter it was just great to see Jonas Gutierrez back on a football pitch.

Whatever happens from here on in will be a bonus, but Jonas is adamant that he can use this as a launch pad for more first team football.

A great personal achievement to battle back from his cancer shock and treatment, an example to so many people both inside and outside football.

Lovely touch as well from his best mate Fabricio Coloccini, handing Jonas the Captain’s armband.

Jonas Gutierrez speaking to the official club website:

“Very pleased to be back, the result is disappointing but you know against this type of team and players, you have to concentrate for 90 minutes.

“A long time, a long wait, really pleased to be back. Really enjoyed the support of the fans, another big step on my way back.

“I want to continue and enjoy my training and play as much as I can between now and the end of the season.”

Captain’s Armband

“It was a surprise (Coloccini handing over the Captain’s armband) but we speak a lot, me and Colo have a special relationship. Really close to me, part of my family.

“So I was really happy to play again with him, pleased to have the Captain’s armband. I have to say thanks to him and now we have to focus on finishing as high as we can.”

Coming onto the pitch and the fan reaction

“It was very very strange, it was like my first game but people also giving that special welcome to me because they know me.

“So I need to say thank you to all the fans, it was my first game back, it was incredible but I want more.”
