Daryl Janmaat was made the scapegoat when Holland lost their opening European Championships qualifier to the Czech Republic.

Having just joined Newcastle United, Janmaat’s late error helped gift a late winner.

Despite having been first choice in Brazil last summer, Janmaat was immediately left out of the Dutch squad without an explanation by new  manager Guus Hiddink.

Speaking to the De Telegraaf newspaper over in Holland, Daryl Janmaat says he doesn’t believe it is the kind of conversation you can have on the telephone but after his recall 6 months later, he is looking forward to having face to face talks with Hiddink.

“I was surprised that I was not there anymore because I had played regularly for the previous two years in succession.”

“I have not had the chance to talk to the coach about it. We will in the coming days, quite a bit of time talking to each other, we now have plenty of time. It is something I don’t do by phone. I do prefer face to face.”

Learning from your mistakes:

“I made a mistake, it was just a bad time, but we are now half a year later. I have learned from it and it will not affect me.

“You can’t immediately turn things around with the Dutch team. When it is your club you have an immediate opportunity to make up for what has happened.”

No need to prove myself:

“I do not have to prove myself again though,I’m 25 and it does not make sense that I would have to prove myself once again.

“I come here to do my best and play as well as possible, everybody knows what I can do and as for myself, I know that as well.”

Tim Krul is also in the squad and Holland face a crunch home match with Turkey on Saturday, with only 6 points from 12 so far, the Netherlands desperately need a win to get back on course.

The following Tuesday sees a glamour friendly with Spain.

Daryl Janmaat will be many Newcstle fans’ idea of their player of the year and the results of our poll of supporters, evealed that he was the player most supporters wanted to stay at Newcastle next season (see the full poll results on all Newcastle players HERE).
