Newcastle have regularly been linked with Marseille winger/forward Andrew Ayew, with recent reports in France saying United were one of a number of clubs to meet the Ghanaian player’s representatives to discuss terms ahead of when he’s out of contract in the summer.
A successful African Cup of Nations saw Ayew score 3 goals in 6 matches to further enhance his value, plus on Friday his fourth goal in 15 league starts helped keep Marseille only 2 points behind Lyon at the top of Ligue 1.
Despite challenging for the title this season, Marseille have ongoing financial problems which have led to reports of the club trying to retain soon to be out of contracts players such as Ayew and Gignac on lower wages than they are currently on.
Speaking to French radio station RTL, Andre Ayew made clear on Sunday that there was no chance of him taking a cut in wages to stay at Marseille;
“The OM (Marseille) have financial worries and can’t afford certain wages.
“I am at the OM now and I could still be tomorrow. I am open to everything in my head.
“I like the OM and there’ll be a meeting soon.
“A cut in pay to stay at OM? No, a player wants to progress in all aspects . “
Andrew Ayew and the likes of Gignac can commit to pre-contract arrangements now, ahead of the summer.
Though there is a small possibility of the soon to be out of contract stars being made better offers nearer the summer, if Marseille can keep their league form going and qualify for the Champions League.
Something which further harmed their finances last season, with a sixth place finish meaning not even Europa League football in this current campaign.
