It looks as though Cheick Tiote could be set to miss the rest of this season.

After playing the first two group matches at the African Cup of Nations, Tiote was suspended for the third one but said to have also picked up an ankle injury.

Ivory Coast Head Coach Herve Renard said in advance of their quarter final against Algeria that he expected the Newcastle midfielder to be on the bench.

However, he ended up not being even on the bench for the quarter final, semi final or final.

However, he was spotted sitting out that dramatic final win over Ghana with his knee heavily bandaged.

Now he ‘s returned to Tyneside both the Chronicle and Northern Echo are reporting that Newcastle still aren’t sure as to the severity of the injury but that he could be looking at 10 weeks or more out of action, effectively ending his season now.

It would be strange for Herve Renard to have put out misleading information about his initial problem being with his ankle, so the implication must be that Cheick Tiote picked up a later/separate knee injury in training.

Thank god , an absolute liability , yellow cards every week , dribbling out in front ov his own box etc , Abeid a far better player ! X

Could be a blessing in disguise!

  • Peter Lamb

    Just play Abeid PLEASE

  • Paul Patterson

Doesn’t bother me this in the slightest.
I see people slagging Anita off (And he isn’t very good) but in reality he’s probably about the same as Tiote- different weakness’s, different strengths, but average all the same.
I also see Abeid being mentioned- Good he’s the future, blend him in gently with Sissoko and Colback.

  • Paul Patterson

scotty63  Agreed, but I don’t see him in the same position as Tiote.
I think Colback, Sissoko and Abeid are all attack minded players. I’ve raved about Colback being every bit the image of Paul Scholes (Banging in goals and can’t tackle).
To sum up, we don’t have a good holding midfielder at the club, but the midfielders we do have at present are better than Tiote anyway. 4-4-2 is our best formation with the players we have . .
