Jonas Gutierrez says that he has been available to play for the last few weeks but that a ‘situation’ in his contract could prevent him being available for selection.
It was widely reported that a clause existed entitling Jonas to an extended contract if he played a certain number of matches, which allegedly was why Alan Pardew hardly played him in the first half of last season before the club were happy to send him on loan to Norwich.
In recent days the local north east press have suggested that Jonas’ contract situation wouldn’t prevent him playing this season but the winger’s own words contradict that.
Surely a compromise can be reached enabling him to be able to play, whatever exists currently in Gutierrez’ contract.
“I am available as of a few weeks ago – I have a situation in my contract and things like that which mean that I am not sure if I’m going to get the opportunity to play.
“I want to but I know other things have to happen to be back. I have got to work hard and be ready then if the situation changes I will do my best to get my opportunity.”
Jonas was also the latest player to have his say on the Newcastle manager/head coach debate:
“You always want the best for the manager, I have known John from five years ago, I hope that they (Carver and current set-up) can get it and stay permanent.
“All we can do is work hard and play well for them and get good results, we are working hard for them to keep the job.”
