I’d say there is a serious need for a clear out but we’d probably never replace them so what’s the point. Gouffran, Obertan, Williamson, Anita, Ameobi, S. Taylor and Riviere, none of them are good enough, perhaps Riviere deserves more time on the pitch to find some form but the rest definitely need to go. If we got rid of them and replaced with quality we’d have a decent squad along with a few more for the future. Our bench today was a sad indictment of the strength of our squad.

  • jimblag

Polarboy I disagree with S. Taylor and I think if Obertan had a string of games in a row he could show something.

  • NatTurner

Polarboy  I agree that there’s a serious need for a clear out.  But I also disagree about S. Taylor.  And I don’t think Riviere deserves more time on the pitch.  Every time he’s on it he shows nothing.  Waste of space for me.

  • NatTurner

jimblag The problem with Obertan is that he is such a limited player bound to be disappointing.  Great pace but he seems to be poor at getting past players, passing, scoring, making the right decisions in the final third.  Fine if he sits on the bench and is used to stretch the game out when needed but he shouldn’t be playing a major role in the squad ever.

  • Polarboy

jimblag Polarboy Taylor is a liability when he is on the pitch, and he isn’t on the pitch very often due to the amount of injuries he gets. Obertan if he gets on for a run of games might have one decent game out of six, the rest of the time he is misplacing passes and wasting the ball in good positions. We were lucky that Villa didn’t score yesterday and Obertan fluffed an extremely good chance to score, typical from him, another liability.

A mid-table squad, with a mid-table coach, all set up to fulfill mid-table aspirations.
    Alas.

  • Polarboy

NatTurner Polarboy No need to write it again you can see what I think of Taylor above. As for our bench as much as I love Guttierrez he was past it two years ago, Armstrong while promising has a ways to go, R. Taylor is a very decent utility man and great at free-kicks when fit but that’s the problem, he is very rarely fit, Woodman, Anita and Gouffran aren’t up to it and Riviere would usually be on the bench instead of Perez.

  • Pulse33

Polarboy NatTurner As it stand S Taylor is our 2nd best Defender and if we get rid of anyone it should be and needs to be Williamson. i disagree with letting some of those players go as they can be decent squad players just not starters. Riviere, Anita, Ameobi and Obertan can be good squad players. Riviere should be at least given another season to prove himself, Anita can do a job if required, while Ameobi and Obertan have done a lot better this season and are tarting to show rewards.

  • Polarboy

Pulse33 Polarboy Just because he is marginally better than Williamson doesn’t mean we should keep him, it means that we need more than one centre half. I hear the Forest lad isn’t starting but hopefully he’ll come good eventually. And if you mean second best centre half as opposed to defender in general you’d still be wrong.
Dummet has shown that he can do a job in there when needed and he isn’t an complete moron to boot. If I was asked who our best defender was Janmaat easily takes that dubious prize. Anita is a joke, doesn’t have the required to skill to compensate for his slight frame, he is stuck in a no man’s land of neither one or the other type of player.
As for Riviere you’ll see in my other comment that I advocated perhaps giving him more time but my patience is thin. Ameobi unfortunately is about as much cop as his brother, flashes of looking decent but not premier league quality. Obertan, you just have to watch his performance today to get handle on the type of player he is, misplaced passes, glorious chance missed, anonymous for large periods, pretty much sums him up.
We need to have greater ambition than thinking it’s OK to have this quality of player’s in our squad, they just aren’t anywhere near good enough and all have the habit of going missing. It wouldn’t be so bad if they at least grafted when they are inevitably out of form but they don’t, well perhaps Anita does, but he is just as ineffective.

  • TradgeJ

I actually think that Williamson had his best game in a long time yesterday, he kept Benteke quiet and made some good interceptions. He’s still probably our worst centre back in the grander scheme of things, but he was good against Villa.

  • TradgeJ

Fairly solid showing from our lads today, nothing too special, but a win is a win. Colo was motm for me by far, put his body on the line on multiple occasions to block shots, and was a good leader for a change!

  • AshGT

It was an acceptable response to last weeks embarrassment. We now need to push on and ensure we don’t get humiliated against Man U and Arsenal. One win or a couple of draws in the balance of March leaves one win for PL safety. Then there’s next season to look forward to!!!

  • AshGT

Agree. Obertan has always flattered to deceive with us and ManU before that. Excellent potential, brief flirtations with good form then disappears and/or is found out by opponents who can readily neutralise his one dimensional game. A reasonable squad player but not the foundations of a successful team.

Polar boy when will people like you stop clinging onto the hope that we are ever going to buy quality. We buy what others don’t want or those that are sick or lame and keep our fingers crossed. Has the last five years taught you nothing?

  • Polarboy

Jarra MIck I am saying what should happen not what I think will happen. If you had read my first comment you would have seen that I said this:

“I’d say there is a serious need for a clear out but we’d probably never replace them so what’s the point”
You should really be more careful before you get on your soap box, it’s a long way down.

  • Polarboy

TradgeJ The odd good game isn’t good enough, overall over a season his lack confidence on the ball and at times poor positional sense are the cause of far too many goals.
