Happy days for Davide Santon as he laid on the goal that sent Inter Milan past Celtic and into the last 16 of the Europa League.
The on-loan Newcastle defender providing the assist for Fredy Guarin in the 88th minute on Thursday night, his stunning twenty yard plus strike winning the match 1-0 and sending the Italians through 4-3 on aggregate..
Celtic were reduced to 10 men with the first half sending off of supposed Newcastle target Virgil Van Dijk, while Santon himself had a scare when Celtic appealed for a penalty thanks to a supposed foul on Stuart Armstrong.
As well as progression in Europe, Santon’s arrival has coincided with three wins out of three and Inter closing the gap on the top four in Serie A to only four points. Only a cup defeat to Napoli has marred his second spell at the club.
Tonight’s game also took him another step towards an alleged ten game trigger which will ensure that he is permanently transferred to Inter Milan for a reported fee of just under £3m.
