As things went from bad to worse in the horror show at the Etihad, at five down we then saw Newcastle’s best and most consistent player, Daryl Janmaat, limp off the pitch.
With only four fit defenders going into the Manchester City match, it was one of the last things any of us wanted to see.
John Carver has now given an update on the Dutch defender’s condition on the club website:
“He has got a tight groin.
“I don’t think he’s too serious at the moment but it is tight and we took him off as a precaution.”
Carver was then asked the following by the club’s own reporter:
It is important that isn’t it, because we are a bit thin at the back at the moment?
“You know me, I’m not going to make excuses.
“I’ll deal with it and just have to adjust accordingly…just get on with it.”
Problems coming home to roost. Janmaat might well end up being available for Villa but I doubt it by the tone of John Carver’s comments.
Having happily seen the club sell Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and loan out Davide Santon and Remie Streete in January, despite then only being left with five defenders, which then became four with Paul Dummett’s injury.
Carver does indeed have to ‘just get on with it’ but this is where the Newcastle model is totally flawed. Employing a yes man who stands there and says and does nothing while Ashley squeezes every last penny out of the club, leaving the manager/head coach/gofer with a threadbare squad.
