This is something I have been meaning to write for a while but after that Burnley game I decided it was finally time.
There are players who for the entire season I have felt are liabilities to the team, though this is football we’re talking about.
We all have our own opinions when it comes to who we’d like to see in the team but surely when the overwhelming majority of the fans agree one player is better than the other, that must mean something? Given the current injuries I think it’s still quite obvious from what we’ve seen so far this season, who deserves to be playing.

Starting off in defence. Janmatt at RB, obviously.
The rest of the defence is where it gets tricky in my opinion as we have Colo, S.Taylor, Williamson, Haidara and Dummett contending for this. At CB I think Colo is a sure starter, even now partnered with a good CB he’s still a top class defender in my opinion. Now who to partner him. I think the man for the job should be Dummet as it is his better position, do you remember how he shined there during our winning streak? This would also leave LB open for Haidara who once again I feel is a great talent and has to be played. Haidara is a good defender and offers so much more than Dummet going forward, the thought of him and Janmatt starting on both sides has great potential.
I like S.Taylor and feel he is a good hard worker but it’s crucial that the two younger defenders get to develop, even before his injury yesterday I still thought Taylor should have been on the bench. Williamson, the great liability. It angers me every time he’s brought on. Williamson is just not at the level needed to play in the team and seems to drag Colo down with him every time they are partnered up
Midfield. I don’t think I have many complaints when it comes to Colback, Tiote and Sissoko. It will be a different question when Abeid returns and even De Jong, but for now all is fine with the middle, poor Anita.
Now up forward and out on the wings, this will be hard. Our current options are Perez, Cabella, Armstrong, Rivere, and Gouffran.
A hard one for me because before Ameobi got injured last week, I thought it was very straightforward and would have said Cabella and Ameobi on the wings and Perez up front.
However, since that won’t be an option for a while let’s move on. I think the easiest way to start this is to just rule out Armstrong. I know he’s a local lad and supposed to be a rising star but from what I have seen of him so far, I don’t rate him too highly. Against Burnley I felt he offered little and I can’t blame him as he’s young and still finding his feet, he should not be played again until he’s ready to step up.
Onto Cabella, he has to start!!! At least get subbed on.Bringing on Williamson and Armstrong ahead of Cabella against Burnley made my blood boil, the game was ours for the taking and yet we choose to handicap ourselves with those two awful substitutions.
I think in his more recent appearances Cabella played very well and I fear if he’s not given pitch time soon, we’ll have another M’bwia situation on our hands.
Perez is an obvious starter. What a little jewel Mr.Carr has found. I think this kid really has the ability to go on and be one of the top strikers in the league in years to come. I think Perez plays better up front as he can create goals out of very little, so I’d probably stick him up front with Cabella and Gouffran to the sides.
I think Gouffran has slightly upped his game the last two matches but still must be dropped when better players start returning. All that being said, Perez can hold his own when not up top so I wouldn’t mind him and Cabella on either side of Riviere for the time being. The jury is still out on Riviere as he’s shown moments of great skill.
In a perfect (no injury )world MY starting 11 would have to be;
Krul, Janmatt, Colo, Dummett, Haidara, Abeid, Colback,Sissoko, Aarons, Cabella, Perez
The bench looking something like;
Eliot, S.Taylor, Santon, R.Taylor, De Jong, Ameobi/Obertan, Rivere
I’m 100% sure though that I would never start Cisse when other options are available, he might score a few odd tap-ins every now and then but there far too few in between to make up for his lack of actually being able to play football.
However, this is not a perfect world and we’ve enough injuries to make a half decent team out of them. So with the current lot and given the horrible displays by those previously mentioned, it truly baffles me how both Pardew and now Carver won’t try;
Alnwick, Janmatt, Colo, Dummett, Haidara, Colback, Tiote, Sissoko, Cabella, Perez, Rivere
I can only pray our new manager has a better knack when it comes to team selection and substitutions than our last. No more Williamson, no more Cisse, NO MORE LIABILITIES
