No quick Newcastle comeback for Cheick Tiote

While Papiss Cisse should be available for Newcastle United’s visit to Hull on Saturday after Senegal’s elimination yesterday, Cheick Tiote is a different matter.

Going into today’s final group match with Cameroon at the African Cup of Nations, Ivory Coast had to win the game to ensure progression into the quarter finals and to avoid the possibility of having to draw lots if the match had ended in another draw.

While Cheick Tiote sat the decider out because he’d picked up two yellow cards in two matches, his teammates put themselves through to the last eight thanks to a goal from Max Gradel.

The Newcastle midfielder will be hoping for a quick recall as Ivory Coast face Algeria on Sunday for a spot in the last four.

If they go past Algeria then Tiote and his team would face either Congo or DR Congo in a semi-final on Wednesday, all but ensuring that he wouldn’t be available for the Stoke home match a week on Sunday. The same day incidentally when the final of the African Nations takes place.
