Newcastle v Southampton

Saturday 17 January 5.30pm Live On SKY Sports

Can United convert a very good 42 minutes at Chelsea into points against third placed Southampton?

Remy Cabella was the most creative player on the pitch but needs to convert that into assists and goals, with the step overs kept to a minimum.

newcastle v southamptonFor once he was guaranteed to be on the team sheet today and he keeps his place, though the caretaker boss does make one change to the team that started at Stamford Bridge.

United line up today with;

Krul, Janmaat, Coloccini, Dummett, Haidara, Colback, Anita, Gouffran, Cabella, Sissoko, Perez

Haidara coming in for Williamson with Dummett switching inside.

While on the bench Newcastle have;

Woodman, Santon, Williamson, Abeid, Ameobi, Armstrong, Riviere

    Which is it?

    Last week Anita had a decent game but Gouffran was anonymous.  Today Gouffran is popping up all over the pitch and Anita is having one of his more pathetic matches.  He looks way below Premier League standards.  I remember when he was grumbling about not being on the Dutch team.  It’d be interesting to see which National teams he would make.  The Dutch, not in a million years.

    NatTurner Sissoko also had a mixed game, some good runs but also some awful touches.  There is still nowhere near enough support for the lone striker though and an inability to track opposition players if you play in the back line apparently.  Two very sloppy goals but we hardly created any clear cut opportunities…the penalty should have been given BUT we need to create more chances – and someone needs to learn how to cross a ball properly!

    DownUnderMag I agree.  I had written the comment above at half time, but my full time assessment is similar to yours.  Someone on another site was blaming Janmaat for the goals.  I thought both stemmed from Colo overcommitting to balls he didn’t win and Dummett being too slow.  The lad practically can’t run.  He seems to lumber around the pitch.  So we still have a CB problem, a striker problem with JC only able to throw on poor old Manu to help Ayoze, and an Anita problem (hard to win with 10 men on the pitch).  I almost think Sissoko’s inconsistency today came from nervousness.  Do you reckon he feels very in the shop window at the moment?  You’re right that it should’ve been 2-2 but that would’ve been a lucky result because I didn’t feel we had it in us to score another goal other than from the penalty spot.

    NatTurner DownUnderMag personally I think the team is crying out for a link up forward, someone to bridge that gap between midfield and attack, someone to help out when we don’t have possession but close enough to be able to get up and help out the other forward.   Too many times we struggled with Perez having to chase down his own passes almost.   I think Colo is a liability at the moment and ever since he got the captaincy seems to think he has to do the work of the entire back four on his own and constantly gets caught out of position – maybe he just doesn’t trust the other players he is alongside??  Hopefully Abeid gets fit soon (and doesn’t go to the ACON) as we looked a different side with him in there filling the quarterback role so masterfully done by Cabaye.  All in all though, depth in the squad is poor to say the least and we need numbers adding, but given we can’t even appoint a manager i’ll not hold my breath for a player or two to be added.
