Are we missing a trick if John Carver isn’t given his chance on permanent basis?
I’ll admit, the uncertainty surrounding Newcastle United at the moment, is taking up way too much of my headspace for me to be able to operate at full capacity in all other aspects of my life.
I must be refreshing the NewsNow feed about 100 times a day easy…I’m now at the point where I’m desperate to see a name that excites me.
So far though not one of the candidates have stood out to me.

You see it’s not just a case of what I think personally, I find myself looking at the names like McClaren, Garde, Sherwood etc and knowing deep down that those names are just not big enough to make all of the fans unite. They are not the kind of managers who would be spared the wrath of Newcastle fans if they didn’t hit the ground running, or went through a bad run of form.
Only one manager in our recent history has been given the privilege of patience and that’s Sir Bobby.
Now granted Sir Bobby Robson was pretty special. England, Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven to name just a few of his previous jobs before returning to his Graceland in the north-east, to begin a story that seems like a lifetime ago now and light years away from where the club is now.
Sir Bobby became the most respected coach on the planet and it didn’t happen by chance. He was and always will be special, not least to us. I asked myself earlier, if he was still here with us now…who would he say was the best man for the vacant Newcastle Head coach job? And the answer was obvious….
John Carver has been a huge part of our recent history. He is a very well respected coach in his own right and has worked tirelessly over the years, going out of his way to learn more and more about the game. I’m as guilty as anyone over this past couple of weeks of immediately dismissing the notion that we would appoint him but the more I think about it, I’m warming to the idea.
I’ve seen a ton of posts and comments from people saying he isn’t proven in the Premier League, he wasn’t any good in Toronto etc and he’s too aggressive and brash. I look at those points and to be honest we have to be fair here I think.
He was never going to pull up any trees in Toronto, especially when the situation was so ridiculous he had his chief scout playing at full back! And as for being brash and arrogant, Sir Bobby, God rest his soul, had his moments too and could also be quite abrasive at times.
I’m not by any means comparing Carver to Sir Bobby Robson in terms of coaching ability, but I do see similarities that go beyond the fact they are both Geordies.
I think Carver deserves a chance. I think no matter who comes in we are not going to qualify for Europe and we are not going to get relegated, so maybe this is the only chance JC will ever get.
Maybe we are all being too quick to dismiss him and could end up losing someone who may be the answer we’ve all being looking for??
It’s just a thought….but for me, I can’t see what we’ve got to lose and based on the managers available at the moment, I don’t see anyone I think will do any better than Carver could do.
Better the devil you know sometimes…
