John Carver says it was players’ choice not to play against Leicester
John Carver felt the full force of the anger of Newcastle fans as they made their feelings known both during the Leicester match and at the final whistle.
In the aftermath we polled the supporters and a massive 85% believe that the caretaker manager was carrying out Mike Ashley’s orders by putting out a weakened team.
John Carver insists it was the players themselves who came to him saying they were carrying knocks and would have to miss Leicester, rather than any other reason.
The only player who wasn’t injured according to Carver was Ayoze Perez, who he said had ‘ran out of fuel’ after playing games in quick succession.
John Carver speaking to the Chronicle;
“When players come in you have to trust them and when they say to me that they are injured, I’ve got to take that at face value.
“It would have helped me if I’d put Moussa Sissoko, Fabricio Coloccini or Ayoze Perez on the pitch, but we could have lost them to injury because they were being put at risk.”
Why wouldn’t I play them?;
“It would have helped my case to get the head coach job – so why wouldn’t I put them on the pitch?
“It is in my best interests to put them out there but it has been taken out of your hands sometimes because of the injury situation – the only one who wasn’t injured was Ayoze Perez.”
If what John Carver says is true, then it doesn’t pain the greatest picture of the Newcastle United dressing room these days, I can’t quite imagine the likes of Alan Shearer saying he was giving such an important game a miss because he was a bit tired and/or carrying a knock.
