German Director of Football confirms Newcastle approach for striker
Reports in Germany last week said that Newcastle United were once again interested in signing Pierre-Michel Lasogga in the January transfer window.
The now twenty three year old forward was repeatedly linked with a move to Tyneside last summer but instead he switched from Hertha Berlin to Hamburg for around £7m.
Today Sport Bild have followed up those reports by publishing an interview with Hamburg’s Director of Football Peter Knabel, who has confirmed that Newcastle United have made an approach but so far haven’t made an offer for Lasogga.
Wiith only two goals in sixteen Bundesliga matches, the move hasn’t proved a success so far and Hamburg are currently only two points off the bottom of the table.
By coincidence Hamburg (as well as a number of other football clubs) were also in Dubai at the same time as Newcastle last week , with the Germans having a friendly against Manchester City at the nearby Hazza Bin Zayed stadium in Abu Dhabi – also part of the United Arab Emirates.
However, German Under 21 international Pierre-Michel Lasogga is currently suffering from a thigh injury and didn’t take part in the friendly which Man City won 2-0.
Mike Ashley could well smell a bargain and has not been put off in the past signing players when injured, such as Hatem Ben Arfa.
Lasogga scored 13 Bundesliga goals in only 18 starts (plus 2 as sub) last season at Hamburg, when on an initial loan from Hertha Berlin.
