Reports today that Arsenal have already held transfer talks with Newcastle for a January purchase of Cheick Tiote.

The claims/reports come from the Daily Star who say that Arsenal are now considering following up those talks with a bid of around £9m.

cheick tioteOne attraction of course in this transfer market is that Newcastle’s top players are still eligible to play in this season’s Champions League. Arsenal play Monaco in the first leg of their last 16 tie on February 25 meaning Cheick Tiote would be back from the African Cup of Nations well before then.

Whether Cheick Tiote is any way, shape or form, one of Newcastle’s ‘top’ players, is open to question.

If there is any substance to these reports then there would be little doubt Mike Ashley would snap their hands off for a player who is one Newcastle’s top earners and who will be 29 when next season kicks off.

Many fans would also think it is a no-brainer for £9m but whether any potential incoming funds would be spent this window is something none of us would put a bet on.

  • No Brainer

    Get in

  • Kev82

I’d drive him there myself. Can’t see any truth in this, unless Wenger has not watched him play for 2-3 years.

  • Maximus Moose

Kev82 So would i Problem is Fatso will pocket the money, Abeid will be mooted as his replacement

  • Brownale69

Ha ha I thought it was Sissoko?

  • garside500

God I hope this happens.  He’s beyond terrible.

  • Pulse33

If it keeps them away from Sissoko and we replace him he can go. Too bad a replacement is unlikely but even so not a bad move for the club.

  • Hughie

Good in a team with many attacking options, but a liability otherwise with his lack of pace and poor constructive play. Teams know him and he is caught on the ball time and again. The man has too many reverse gears . Abeid looks a much better option. Sell

  • A lex

It would leave a gap in the squad, Mr Charnley.

  • DownUnderMag

The team looks more balanced without him to be honest, he is just too negative an option when he plays, yes he breaks up the opponents play but his back-passes, endless free kicks and misplaced passes break our play up too.

  • SimonM68

For me he seems to veer between fantastic and horrendous in 6 monthly segments?  Not going to win you the Chamioins League. The ‘value’ is of course academic because it won’t be getting reinvested until the next panic.
Only other thing to add is that I hope he conducts himself a bit more professionally than Sissoko, who has been like an Amsterdam slapper writhing in the shop window.

  • vbhgft

Maximus Moose Kev82 A fit Abeid may well prove to be a totally acceptable replacement.

  • Paul Patterson

I’d endorse this one. Total liability.

  • Maximus Moose

Yes he will be & the cash will go in Mikes Piggy bank or Jocko Land

  • SimonM68

DownUnderMag Agree with you, but is it down to what’s next to you?  When he played next to Cabaye (just prior to his departure) I don’t think there was a better central pairing in the league??  I think he’s a bit like Batty in that he needs to win it (preferably without a yellow card) and give it easy – not try anything remotely flash….

  • A lex

Maximus Moose Do you not mean that the Piggy will put it in the Mike Bank?

  • toonterrier

Tiote will show his class when he plays in a team well organised and with attacking options which we dont have at Newcastle. He has been wasted the last couple of years with the puppets tactics and now under the direction of another incompetent. Good luck to him but will again weaken our team with another cheapy grafted in to try and replace him.

  • garside500

toonterrier No offence mate but I totally disagree.  The man has a brain the size of a pea and he can’t pass a ball 5 yards.  He constantly puts the team under pressure through his lack of technique and single mindedness. Add into that his appalling disciplinary record and you’ve got a liability on your hands.

  • garside500

toonterrier Having said that, we’ll obviously be weaker if he leaves.  Not through missing him as a player but solely because we won’t replace him.

  • vbhgft

toonterrier So Tiote is a robot only able to play if he is “programmed” correctly by the manager? Nonsense. Pardew or Carver didn’t lose the ball for him on the edge of the penalty area did they? Pardew or Carver didn’t get him endlessly yellow carded..

  • Maximus Moose

    A lex Maximus Moose yip

  • Maximus Moose

garside500 toonterrier Wenger seems to know what he`s doing

  • vbhgft

Loses the ball in dangerous positions – cheick
    Sends passes astray – cheick
Picks up too many senseless bookings/suspensions – cheick
    Injury prone – cheick
    No pace – cheick
Poor in the air – cheick
    No goals – cheick
African Cup of Nations/regular long plane journeys – cheick
No leadership qualities when captain – cheick

    Verdict – sell.

  • garside500

vbhgft Made up paper nonsense – Cheick

  • vbhgft

garside500 vbhgft Yes, the Daily Star is a reputable source of “news”. Not.

  • RexN

As Charnley is reported in the Chronicle “I can’t envisage any player we want to retain leaving”.

A Mag article on 17th November identified Tiote as the “most likely” to be sold in January, given his contract situation and young cover in the club. There are still 10 days to sell more!

  • bidz01

Said it before but I’ll say it again- fatman will wait till the last minute then sell at least one player, with no time to get “one over the line”
I think it will be Tiote and/or Sissoko that maybe get sold but wouldn’t be surprised if Perez is not being tapped up already
