Surprise comeback for Newcastle centre-back

While Alan Pardew was reported to be saying his goodbyes to players and staff at the training ground on Tuesday afternoon, a behind closed doors friendly was taking place between a Newcastle United team and a Gateshead eleven.

An extra game that was to be fitted in as Alan Pardew had previously mentioned, giving pitch time to both Jonas Gutierrez and Davide Santon, supposedly to help give them a chance of playing against Burnley and/or Leicester in the coming few days.

However, there was another welcome surprise, as Curtis Good made an out of the blue appearance in the starting eleven.

The club have given zero information about the Aussie defender’s recuperation, with Good having being out for nine months and in the process missed the chance to go to the World Cup in Brazil.

Multiple substitutions were made in this kickabout and while Jonas Gutierrez and Curtis Good came through it OK, sadly Davide Santon was forced off after picking up a reported ankle injury, his first playing time after being out for over eight months.

The actual game saw Geordie striker Adam Campbell score for United, with Gateshead’s Michael Rankine equalising in a 1-1 draw.
