Sunderland now favourites to land Newcastle transfer target
Sunderland are now reported to be favourites to land a longstanding Newcastle transfer target.
United have been linked with twenty three year old centre-back Virgil van Dijk as far back as early 2012, over a year before he moved to Celtic from Groningen for a bargain £2.5m.
It was also believed that van Dijk was the defender who Newcastle had lined up to replace Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa in the summer but failed to get the deal across the line in time after United let the Frenchman go out on loan.
Now it is widely reported that Celtic are prepared to sell the Dutch defender and have already lined up a replacement.
A number of Premier league clubs including Everton and West Brom, as well as Newcastle, have also enquired about Virgil Van Dijk, but The Mail report that the player has told his teammates that Sunderland are the club who are most advanced in negotiations.
The defender is valued at around £8m and as always when buying players who have done well in Scotland, you never quite know if they’ll be able to make the step up to the Premier League.
However, Newcastle are desperate for a quality centre-back and if not Van Dijk, then surely they need to be bringing in somebody this January. Especially when you consider all three established centre-backs at Newcastle see their current deals come to an end and no moves have been made as yet to extend any of Coloccini, Williamson and Steven Taylor’s contracts.
Alan Pardew has stated that Newcastle have to bring in players in January but whether that turns into action we await with interest.
