Reports in Brazil of Newcastle transfer move for Jo are surely wide of mark…

Reports today from Brazil that a Newcastle transfer move for striker Jo could be on the cards in the January transfer window.

You may recall that Jo (Joao Alves de Assis Silva to give him his full name) was one of Manchester City’s first signings after the oil started pouring into the blue half of Manchester.

Against stern competition he could arguably be seen as their worst signing of the moneybags era, costing £20m from CSKA Moscow he scored only one Premier League goal for Man City and ended up going out on a number of loans before leaving on a free three years after coming to England in July 2008.

Jo ended up back in Brazil at Internacional on that free transfer and then was sold for around £2m after less than one year to Atletico Meneiro.

Despite not being exactly prolific on the goalscoring front even back in Brazil, Jo was still called up by Brazil and made three appearances at the World Cup finals.

He has 26 goals over the last two years but is now reported to have fallen out with his club on disciplinary matters and with no future at Atletico Meneiro, the Brazilian sports website folhaesportes.com are claiming he could sign for Newcastle in January for around £3m.

I was surprised when I checked that Jo is still only 27 years old and Newcastle are desperate for at least one quality striker to be added ASAP, it must though surely be a longshot that Jo is an answer to that shortage, though that price tag may attract somebody who likes the look of a potential ‘bargain’…
