Predicted Newcastle Starting 11 v Burnley

Burnley v Newcastle
Tuesday 2 December 7.45pm

The good news is that it is thirty two seasons since Newcastle lost at Burnley but the bad news is that it is thirty nine since United won there with a Tommy Craig penalty.

Two years before that win, the two teams met of course in that famous semi-final, two Supermac goals sending Newcastle to Wembley and final misery against Liverpool and Kevin Keegan.

While the teams met regularly post-war, the last four decades have kept the two apart, even Burnley’s sole season in the Premier League coincided with United in the Championship.

It isn’t hard to guess where the home side’s biggest threat is likely to come from, Danny Ings having scored four in the last five league matches and many clubs allegedly watching him, including Newcastle.

The promoted team are an unknown quantity for most of us and looked to be heading back to the Championship without much of a fight. However, seven points out of the last nine will have given them hope and undoubtedly vital confidence.

With only five goals scored in seven home Premier League matches, it suggests that if United can get two or more then it should be an away win.

To their credit though Burnley have only conceded ten in those seven matches at Turf Moor which suggests a night of few chances and the first goal being crucial.

On Saturday it was West Ham got that bit of luck and won the match when Kouyate’s poor shot rolled into Cresswell’s path.

Tonight it is vital that Newcastle get on the front foot and press the home team back, rather than sitting back and risking Ings showing why other clubs are after him.

I fancy Pardew to play both Cisse and Perez up front, though maybe the Spanish forward in a more withdrawn role.

Cabella was left out on Saturday and I can see a repeat of that, with the Newcastle manager going for more of a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1, rather than 4-3-3/4-5-1, with Gouffran and Sammy Ameobi as wide midfield players and Anita & Tiote in the middle.

At the back it is almost impossible to say for certain with injuries but all things being equal I can see the likely Newcastle starting 11 v Burnley being;

Steven Taylor
