Papiss Cisse set to be ruled out until February after Everton match
As expected, Papiss Cisse has been named in Senegal’s provisional squad for the African Cup of Nations finals beginning 17 January.
Alain Giresse named a 28 man squad and they begin their training camp in Dakar on January 2, throwing into doubt Papiss Cisse’s involvement in the Newcastle match with Burnley on New Year’s Day, with the cup-tie at Leicester on Saturday 3 January definitely missing the Senegal striker.
It would appear that the striker will only be available against Burnley if United ask for special dispensation for Cisse to link up late with his national squad and Senegal agree to that.
The Senegal squad will be whittled down to 23 when they move to El Jadida in Morocco to begin their final preparations for the finals in Equatorial Guinea, which run from January 17 to February 8.
Senegal are in Group C and their fixtures are;
19 Jan v Ghana
23 Jan v South Africa
27 Jan v Algeria
One person who was less than happy with the squad selection was ex-Newcastle striker Demba Ba. After hearing he wasn’t included he had this to say about national coach Giresse;
“I can’t wait to hear his excuses and destroy them one by one.”
Alan Pardew’s claims that Papiss Cisse can’t play regular matches would appear certain to fall on deaf ears judging from past experience.
A key member of the Senegal team, I have little doubt Papiss Cisse will start each game.
