Papiss Cisse heads off after elbowing all opposition out of his way

Papiss Cisse has (figuratively) elbowed all opposition out of the way before he heads off to play for Senegal in the African Cup of Nations.

The striker who is bound for Equitorial Guinea with his international teammates, signed off for the calendar year with yet another goal against Everton, the Newcastle striker keeping a remarkable record going.

Subbed after 73 minutes in that 3-2 win, that means Cisse has only 633 minutes on the pitch so far in the Premier League this season.

With nine goals in that ten and a half hours of play, it makes it an average of 70 minutes for every goal Papiss Cisse has scored, bettering the average of the likes of Sergio Aguero (every 75 mins) and Frank Lampard (82 mins) who has also been used sparingly.

The following are the leading minutes per goal contenders, based on a minimum of three goals scored (minutes per goal and then number of PL goals scored so far this season in brackets);

70 Papiss Cisse (9)

75 Sergio Aguero (14)

87 Frank Lampard (4)

92 Olivier Giroud (5)

98 Didier Drogba (3)

103 Diego Costa (14)

Papiss Cisse of course picked up a three match retrospective ban after replays showed him elbowing Seamus Coleman of Everton – silly boy.

We all hope for a safe return for Papiss Cisse and it will be a worrying time for John Carver, or whoever else gets the manager’s job, as Newcastle’s only credible out and out striker plays for his country.

In the meantime there will be massive pressure on Ayoze Perez unless somebody else steps up to the plate, or Mike Ashley opens his purse…
