In a remarkable turn of events, Newcastle United’s Sammy Ameobi is reported to be in discussions with the club and is on the verge of signing a new three year contract extension.

There have been mentions in the UK press plus over in Nigeria the media there say that a contract should be agreed before Christmas.

Going into this campaign, Ameobi had only started six Premier League matches and looked to be going nowhere.

With his current deal ending in June, Alan Pardew even went public in saying that something had to happen if Sammy Ameobi was to have any chance of staying at St.James’ Park.

Along with a number of other fringe players, Shola’s brother has risen to the occasion and in his eight starts and a few substitute appearances he has now registered one goal and three assists, the latest being the vital opener against Chelsea on Saturday.

Recently on our website, Dean Wilkins wrote about the strange fact that Newcastle had allowed a situation to develop where a massive 21 different players saw their contracts end by June 2016, including 10 in June 2015, Sammy Ameobi being one of them.

Amongst those seeing their contracts end in June 2016 are all three of Newcastle’s senior centre-backs – Coloccini, Steven Taylor and Williamson.

With clubs usually reluctant to see players get in a position with less than two years left, it remains to be seen whether Mike Ashley will follow what looks an imminent Sammy Ameobi contract with a few more to tie down key players.
