Would Newcastle fans lose to Sunderland in return for Cup semi? Poll result
Yesterday we asked Newcastle fans if they would take Newcastle losing to Sunderland if it meant beating Tottenham and a Cup Semi-Final place.
Sometimes poll results are predictable but I wasn’t sure what we’d get with this one as taking defeat off the mackems is never easy to take…
With Bournemouth, Sheffield United and Derby all having home ties against admittedly tough Premier League opposition in the other quarter finals, there is the extra potential positive of Newcastle facing a two leg semi against lower league opposition IF they get through themselves.
So all the votes are now counted and the result is;
54% Would take defeat against Sunderland if it guaranteed beating Spurs and a place in the semi-finals
46% Would rather beat Sunderland and bow out of the League Cup
Interesting to see Newcastle supporters totally split down the middle and I guess that if it was a guarantee of the final then you would have had a much higher percentage saying yes to the deal.
However, it does ask questions of just how important actually winning something is compared to that rivalry/passion that lights up the derby matches.
I wonder what the answers would be from fans of Arsenal/Spurs, Liverpool/Everton or Man Utd/Man City?
Maybe if there was real belief that United would win something one day then fans might have a completely different mindset.
